Since September 2008 Andreas Kirstädter is full professor and director of the Institute of Communication Networks and Computer Engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.

His research interests include high-speed networks (optical access and multi-layer), network virtualization, mobile networks, hardware implementation of communication protocols, Future Internet, and network services.

He is author and co-author of more than 70   publications in these fields.

Before coming to University of Stuttgart, he was 11 years with Siemens AG and Nokia Siemens Networks GmbH & Co. KG as a Senior Principle Research Scientist and Head of Network-Control Plane and Transport. There he worked on research topics in the area of high-speed networking, WDM networks, simulation, analytical modelling and high-speed hardware design.

Andreas Kirstädter studied Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering at Technical University Munich (TUM). From 1991 to 1997 he was with the Institute for Communication Networks at TUM where he received his Dr.-Ing. degree (summa cum laude) in December 1997.

He is inventor / co-inventor of more than 20 national and international   patents and patent applications  in the field of network element technologies and network control.

Andreas Kirstädter is a member of VDE/ITG Fachausschuss 5.3   (Optische Nachrichtentechnik), and VDE/ITG Fachausschuss 5.2   ("Kommunikationsnetze und Systeme")

In 2007 he was one of the general chairs of   ECOC. In 2013 he was the Program Chair of   NetSys/KiVS. From 2014 until 2022 he was the Program Chair of the ITG-Fachtagungen "Photonische Netze".

Between July 2009 and Sept. 2011 Andreas Kirstädter was also head (act.) of the Institute of IT Services at University of Stuttgart.
