Title

Shared Medium Based Contention Resolution in ATM Switches to Cope with Bursty Data Traffic

Abstract

This paper first identifies the need for input buffering and efficient contention resolution in future ATM switches that have to handle an increasing share of bursty and asymmetric data traffic. Then different types of existing contention resolution mechanisms are reviewed and a new architecture is presented based on modified LAN medium access protocols. Extensions for the integration of multicast and prioritized traffic are given together with a discussion of the scalability of this approach. Finally the perfomance of an adapted version of the CRMA-II MAC is compared to that of another contention resolution approach and an output buffered switch.
