Abstract

This paper presents planning procedures for WDM network architectures modeling current wavelength selective node architectures and reach-dependent transponder types. We describe three multi-period planning approaches, namely end- of-life planning, and incremental planning with and without forecast. Using mathematical optimization based on a cost model for network elements, we apply these approaches to realistic Case Studies. We consider multi-period aspects of uncertainty, capital return, reduction of component cost over time, and new technologies.
