100 Gbit/s Ethernet for True End-to-End Carrier-Grade Ethernet Networks
Abstract
Ethernet is an unbeaten success story extending its reach from LAN to the metro areas and probably soon also into core networks. 100 Gbit/s Ethernet will be a key enabler for true end-to-end carrier-grade Ethernet networks. We discuss functions and standards required to enable carrier-grade Ethernet backbone networks. We report as well a CAPEX and OPEX study of Ethernet core networks and competitive network architectures as on 100 Gbit/s transmission experiments over several hundred kilometres of fibre using a cost-effective integrated ETDM receiver. The results propose that Ethernet will soon be mature enough for deployment in backbone networks and provide huge cost advantages to providers.
